DACA Program and the Need to Protect It

Conservative Republicans have long used the DACA program as a bargaining chip to further their agenda in Congress. They use the DACA program as leverage to pass unpopular policies. Some of these policies include funding of the wall at the Mexican border which the Trump administration has made a priority. These tactics have caused a lot of anxiety to the beneficiaries of the DACA program. Young immigrants have been left to worry as they don’t know any other home other than the US.

DACA is a program that was announced by President Obama as a deterrent to the deportation of young immigrants who came to the US as children. The program was a result of President Obama being frustrated by Congress when he tried to push for immigration reforms. Announced on June 2012, the program was meant to be a temporary measure as Congress was to work out on a permanent solution to the immigration issue.

For one to be eligible for the DACA program, one must fulfill some conditions. First, the person applying for the program has had to be below 31 years at the time of announcing the program. Applicants must have to come to the US before they reached their 16th birthday and should have lived in the US continuously from June 15, 2007. Also, one ought to have lived physically in the US from June 15, 2012, to the time that they were applying for the program. The recipients of the program had to be in school, holders of diploma certificates or have been honorably discharged from the military. One also ought to have been on the good side of the law as any conviction would lead to loss of the rights afforded by the DACA program.

The recipients of DACA get work permits to work in the US. The validity of the program is two years where one can renew it. The DACA program has become popular with the American public with the majority supporting it. Despite this support the programme the Trump administration has consistently tried to terminate the program.

In September 2017, Attorney General Jeff Sessions declared the administration would terminate the program in March 208. Also, in the same month, then Secretary of Homeland Security, John Kelly, met with the Hispanic lawmakers and notified them of the administration’s intention to shut down the program. These developments put into jeopardy the future of many young immigrants; there was an uproar from the public. Organisations such as Frontera Fund came forward so that they could help address the plight of the young immigrants.

Frontera Fund offered to sensitize the public of the importance of preserving DACA as Congress searches for a lasting solution for the problem. The fund has also been pushing for A DREAM Act legislation which out to find a permanent solution. The fund was started by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin who previously worked as journalists. Other than helping to out on migration reforms the Frontera Fund is also involved in making sure the First Amendment is respected.

Always Making Music: The Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers were formed when Alex Pall and Andrew “Drew” Taggart met in 2012. They were introduced by their mutual friend and current band manager Adam Alpert, who know both men were looking for a partner for their music. Much to no one’s surprise, the two hit it off and formed a fast friendship that led to the Chainsmokers playing their first show in 2014 at Terminal 5 in New York, opining for Timeflies. After that gig the rest, as they say, was history, as the dup began playing regular live shows, releasing albums and singles, and hitting #1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic and Top 200 Charts with their first full-length album, “Memories…Do Not Open.”

In-between EPs and albums, the Chainsmokers release many singles that can be downloaded for free at their official website. In late July they released their most recent of these singles, “Side Effects”, featuring vocals by friend of the band Emily Warren. Warren has collaborated with the Chainsmokers several times before, and the duo says they truly love working with her. They speak about how effortless the collaborations with Warren are, with Pall and Taggart saying she is an intelligent, compassionate and well-educated musician that they enjoy working with.

“Side Effects” is an up-tempo, disco influenced song. Its upbeat flow is a departure from the Chainsmokers’ recent releases, most of which were written during winter. The season impacts the feelings the duo have at any given time, and their music is written to be a reflection of these feelings as well as their experiences at the time. Calling “Side Effects” a “summer banger”, the two wanted a song that would get people excited and energetic for the summer season.

The Chainsmokers perform live shows on a regular basis all across the country. They have evolved from “two guys behind a turntable” to having many elements of a traditional live band on stage with them. They especially like the contributions made by their drummers. Taggart has put effort into singing live before a crowd, something he wasn’t too terribly comfortable with only a year ago.

Betsy DeVos Should Not Be Underestimated Because She Is A Force To Be Reckoned With

Residents of Michigan and especially Grand Rapids have been having a difficult time with how the media has portrayed Betsy DeVos. The Holland, Michigan native recently became the Secretary of Education for the United States and has been dealing with plenty of outspoken critics since. During her confirmation hearings, she was hammered by one Democrat after another who worked to trap her with questions that they hoped would make her look ignorant. While she was bothered by the whole fiasco, she has already moved on and gotten to work for the American people.

In Michigan, Betsy DeVos has served as the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and has also been a large part of legislation passed in the state to give its residence the freedom of educational choice. She has led the charge as an advocate of charter schools and public schools and has worked to see public funds pay for the tuitions of American children who wish to attend these kinds of schools. When she first became Secretary of Education for the U.S., she got right to work by attempting to set up a meeting between the two leaders of the largest teachers unions and herself. Only Randi Weingarten agreed to meet with her, while Lily Eskelsen García declined. Many saw her refusal to meet with DeVos as a partisan move.

Mike Cox, a Republican who once served as a state attorney general, commented that Betsy DeVos is a force to be reckoned with. He went further to say that she is a very formidable opponent who has been successful in the state of Michigan where many others have not. This is the woman that people in Michigan are familiar with; not the one that the media has made her out to be. Politicians in Washington have cautioned leaders of the Democrat party to not underestimate Betsy DeVos. Many are sure that she will find her footing soon and that she will fight to the end for what she believes in once she does.

Betsy DeVos believes that every American family should have the opportunity to send their kids to a school they choose. She has pointed to the many failures of public schools as an a example for why this should be taking place. It is her hope that more legislation will be passed that will enable economically challenged American families to take advantage of public vouchers. These vouchers will help to pay for the tuition of kids whose families would have never been able to afford to go to these kinds of quality schools in the first place.
