Residents of Michigan and especially Grand Rapids have been having a difficult time with how the media has portrayed Betsy DeVos. The Holland, Michigan native recently became the Secretary of Education for the United States and has been dealing with plenty of outspoken critics since. During her confirmation hearings, she was hammered by one Democrat after another who worked to trap her with questions that they hoped would make her look ignorant. While she was bothered by the whole fiasco, she has already moved on and gotten to work for the American people.
In Michigan, Betsy DeVos has served as the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and has also been a large part of legislation passed in the state to give its residence the freedom of educational choice. She has led the charge as an advocate of charter schools and public schools and has worked to see public funds pay for the tuitions of American children who wish to attend these kinds of schools. When she first became Secretary of Education for the U.S., she got right to work by attempting to set up a meeting between the two leaders of the largest teachers unions and herself. Only Randi Weingarten agreed to meet with her, while Lily Eskelsen García declined. Many saw her refusal to meet with DeVos as a partisan move.
Mike Cox, a Republican who once served as a state attorney general, commented that Betsy DeVos is a force to be reckoned with. He went further to say that she is a very formidable opponent who has been successful in the state of Michigan where many others have not. This is the woman that people in Michigan are familiar with; not the one that the media has made her out to be. Politicians in Washington have cautioned leaders of the Democrat party to not underestimate Betsy DeVos. Many are sure that she will find her footing soon and that she will fight to the end for what she believes in once she does.
Betsy DeVos believes that every American family should have the opportunity to send their kids to a school they choose. She has pointed to the many failures of public schools as an a example for why this should be taking place. It is her hope that more legislation will be passed that will enable economically challenged American families to take advantage of public vouchers. These vouchers will help to pay for the tuition of kids whose families would have never been able to afford to go to these kinds of quality schools in the first place.
